Why is SPF so important?

I'd like to think that we all listen to all of the sun safety reminders that are everywhere during the summer months about applying sun screen and how many times/how often you should re apply. - However I'm sure at some point we've all been caught out and ended up rocking the red lobster luck!

Last month I was attending an event at a race track and although it didn't seem that hot, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, a cool breeze and the sun was shining and well you guessed it... I ended up with a bright red lobster face, I'd caught the sun big time... my face was so red and sore for a few weeks after. I even had to get some steroid cream from the GP to help my sunburnt skin heal. (I also get a telling off from the GP too and rightly so!) so I wanted to write this post to  raise awareness of the danger that the sun can posses to our skin!

Firstly, what it sunburn?

Sunburn is a form of radiation burn that effects living tissue such as our skin cells, so when you are over exposure to the sunlight for a prolonged period of time the sun's UV-Rays causes harm to our skin. Sunburnt skin = damaged skin, which is usually characterised by red, warm, sore and tender skin. Repeated and prolonged episodes of skin burn can result in ageing the skin and cancer!

As I learnt the hard way, it can be so easy to underestimate the strength of the sun and it's rays when your outside, as the wind may cool your skin and you may not even notice that you're getting burnt! Therefore you should always wear an SPF all year around to avoid sun damaged skin!

Don't get out in the sun without this checklist!

Rather than lecture you about sun safety,  I have made you 
a sun safety checklist so you can be safe in the sun and hopefully avoid the lobster look! 

• DO make sure your sun block protects against
UVA and UVB rays.
• DO apply at least half an hour before heading outside.
• DO apply a generous, liberal amount all over the body, remembering to cover those easy-to-miss spots including the neck, hands and feet.
• DO reapply at least every 2 hours and after swimming.
• DO check any medication or skincare products you are using to see if they can make the skin more photosensitive (more sensitive to sunlight).
• DON’T reapply when the rest of your friends or family are. Every skin has a different burn rate, so if you are paler than your companions you need to be reapplying far more regularly.
• DON’T rely on the shade. It will give the skin a bit of respite but you still need to use your SPF.
• DON'T use last year's sun screen, if it's older than 10 months, bin it and buy a new one as it will no longer protect your skin from the UVA and UBV rays!
